Construction sites are messy places to deploy technology. Dust, weather, intermittent power, no fixed network. Most cameras and edge boxes that work fine in a factory just fall over in this environment. Tower is what we built for it: a self-contained, weatherproof safety kit that drops onto a site and starts working without a site IT visit.
What's inside Tower
Tower is an IP66 enclosure with everything needed to run the platform on a construction site. The bill of materials:
- Industrial computer and battery backup. Runs HUB locally. Battery keeps it up when site power is cut.
- Screen and camera mount. Connected pole carrying the camera, plus a screen for live alerts.
- 4G connectivity. No wired internet needed. Drops onto a site and connects itself.
- Industrial power socket. Takes mains, generator, or solar input. Whatever the site has, Tower can run on it.
- Standalone operation. Once configured, no one needs to touch it. Alerts and violations show on the screen as they happen.
How Tower is built
Two variants: one with solar panels included, one without. We worked with a local vendor (King Island) for the electrical kit, aluminium housing, and junction box. The schematic below shows the basic variant.
HUB runs on the industrial computer, which is battery-backed for continuous operation. The IP camera connects to the computer, and the LTE router provides internet. The junction box can take input from a generator (the standard option on most construction sites), which means Tower runs on mains during the working day and on battery when site power is shut down. The solar variant is the same wiring except the solar panels feed the battery.
We've open-sourced a cost estimator sheet so you can sanity-check what a Tower build should cost in your region. The sheet is here. Drop it into a copy, fill in your local prices, and compare against what your vendor is quoting.
Why this matters on a construction site
Tower is built specifically for construction and follows the draft Ministry of Manpower guidelines on site video surveillance. The benefits that show up in deployments:
- Real-time enforcement. Live alerts and on-site sirens when violations happen, not a weekly report.
- Quick to install. Plug-and-play. A site that decides on Monday can have Tower working by Wednesday.
- Runs unattended. Standalone operation means no daily babysitting. Set it up, walk away, check the dashboard when needed.
- Built for the conditions. Weatherproof, dust-resistant, generator-friendly. The environment isn't a problem.
Why we built it
Tower exists because the construction industry has the highest injury and fatality rates of any sector we work with, and the standard CCTV setup doesn't move the needle on either. Tower is the on-site kit that gets the AI safety platform working in an environment where deploying anything else is difficult.
